چکیده

Regular boundary element method is employed for the variational formulation of Helmholtz equation that governs the waveguiding problems. Like in the Charge simulation method, in this method, the source points associated with the fundamental solutions are allocated outside the domain so that the singular integrals which occur in the standard boundary element procedure can be avoided. First, the formulation is developed for the two-dimensional scalar Helmholtz problem solving for the axial components of either electric or magnetic fields. The application of the formulation is shown for simple hollow rectangular waveguide and dielectric-slab-loaded rectangular waveguide. Then the formulation is extended for the analysis of dielectric waveguides of open type incorporating axial components of both electric and magnetic fields, for the solution of the propagating modes which are generally of hybrid types. To show the validity and quality of the formulation, it is applied to a circular step-index optical waveguide and a dielectric rectangular waveguide. Very close agreements have been found when the solutions are compared with the ones obtained by different methods. One distinct

Finite Element Analysis of Open - type Dielectric / Optical Waveguides

Optical fibers or integrated optical waveguides have arbitrary cross-sectional index or refraction distribution. An efficient finite element method for analyzing the propagation characteristics of dielectric / optical waveguides with open boundary is presented. The propagation modes are hybrid, for which a variational expression is formulated in terms of the longitudinal electric and magnetic f...

Giant transverse optical forces in nanoscale slot waveguides of hyperbolic metamaterials.

Here we demonstrate that giant transverse optical forces can be generated in nanoscale slot waveguides of hyperbolic metamaterials, with more than two orders of magnitude stronger compared to the force created in conventional silicon slot waveguides, due to the nanoscale optical field enhancement and the extreme optical energy compression within the air slot region. Both numerical simulation an...

Theoretical investigation of compact couplers between dielectric slab waveguides and two-dimensional metal-dielectric-metal plasmonic waveguides.

We theoretically investigate the properties of compact couplers between high-index contrast dielectric slab waveguides and two-dimensional metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength plasmonic waveguides. We show that a coupler created by simply placing a dielectric waveguide terminated flat at the exit end of a plasmonic waveguide can be designed to have a transmission efficiency of ~70% at the optic...

A Revisit to the Propagation through Conducting Helix Loaded Dielectric Elliptic Optical Waveguides

The paper emphasizes the propagation behavior of dielectric optical waveguides with elliptical cross-section with the introduction of conducting helical windings at the core-clad interface. Helix pitch angle plays the determining role to control the wave propagation. For the sake of simplicity, two extreme values of pitch angle, namely, 0 and 90, are taken into account, and studies are made...

Dielectric based resonant guided wave networks.

Resonant guided wave networks (RGWNs) are demonstrated to operate based on dielectric waveguides, broadening the scope of this optical design approach beyond plasmonics. The intersection of two dielectric waveguides that is modified by a tuned scattering particle is shown to function as an equal power splitting element, a key enabler of resonant guided wave networks. We describe structures comp...
